Blueberry Picking

Last weekend, my friend Kimmy and I drove up to Odessa, just north of Tampa, to the Blue Youth Berries farm to pick our own blueberries. It was our first time visiting a you-pick farm and it was such a fun adventure. We walked through aisles of blueberry trees, some more treacherous than others, to gather fresh berries for summer snacks.

The farm provided the buckets, and once you've gotten yours, the blueberry hunt begins. It was very much like playing a big game of hiding go seek while you look high and low for the blue and ripe berries.

While walking through the aisles of tall blueberry trees (and occasionally swatting away dragonflies), it was very rewarding to look down at your bucket and see all the sun-sweet berries you've picked. The experience so worthwhile, and you go home with as many berries as you want.

The farm also grows other veggies and berries, which means I'll have to come back for another harvest.

I made a couple things with my blueberries before eating them all raw: my parent's favorite blueberry coffee cake (recipe here) and baked french toast

Have you ever picked your own fruits at a farm? I really want to try picking apples up north some time!

  1. I've only ever went apple picking but I would love to go blueberry picking! The sell them in such small batches at the store that it would be so nice to come home with as many as fill a bucket! A baked French toast with fresh picked blueberries is so dreamy!

  3. Blueberry picking sounds amazing! I would love to take the drive up and do something like that someday. We picked blackberries growing up out of my aunt's backyard and that was always fun. Great photos!

  4. Berry picking is amazing! I love walking away with pounds of delicious berries to freeze for eating throughout the year, and it's so much cheaper too. Your photos from the trip look so fun.
